History and characteristics of the Caves of Drach
Although the Drach Caves were known during the Middle Ages, they were not explored until the 18th century. In 1880, the German topographer and speleologist M.F. Will drew up the first detailed plan of the cave and in 1989, the French speleologist E.A. Martel discovered the cave that can be visited today.
The cave has been open to visitors since the 20th century when it began to be adapted to allow access and was illuminated to facilitate the tour.
The Cuevas del Drach are located inside carbonate rocks that are estimated to be between 5 and 11 million years old. They are calcareous rocks that have been broken down by the action of rainwater to form halls and lakes. The grotto is covered with stalactites and stalagmites that in some points join to form columns.
Where are the Caves of Drach?
Of all the caves in Mallorca, the Cuevas del Drach are the best known among tourists. These caves have become one of the most visited attractions on the island, and it is not surprising since their route hides a great beauty that is worth exploring.
The Caves of Drach are located on Carretera de Les Coves in the town of Porto Cristo, a fishing village on the east coast of the island. You can get there by private vehicle or by public transport (bus or taxi). From Palma de Mallorca you can reach the Caves of Drach in 1 h by car or 2 h by bus.
The Caves of Drach Tour
